I am back home again. Whew! What a whirlwind! Last night I slept in the spare room, mostly because I was too lazy to clean off my bed which I left in a shambles of last minute packing scramble. But I also wanted to sleep someplace where I wouldn't be able to wake up and see a clock, so I could just stay in bed until my body said it was time to get up, because if I wake and see the clock blinking morning I will get up. As a result I stayed in bed until after 11, so I must've needed the rest.
Monday afternoon I ventured downtown on my own to attend a taping of The Hour. I took a bus east to the St. Clair W subway station then rode south all the way to Union Station where I exited onto Front Street and started walking west. By this time I was kind of hungry so I figured I'd grab a bite somewhere along the way. I thought about treating myself by going into the Royal York in search of eats but by that time I had gone past and would have had to backtrack. I considered REALLY treating myself by lunching at Azure where Stacy and I got the most incredible eggs benny ever on the last trip, but I just wasn't feeling very fancy, and it was so freaking hot, I just wanted to disappear underground into a dark nook or cranny. And then I remembered! I was heading right toward the Canyon Creek Chophouse where Stacy and I had enjoyed steaks and garlic bread and rich desserts. I had said I wouldn't go without her ... but ... damn! I was hungry and it was RIGHT there! So I went in and opted to sit in the bar area in a cute little 2-person booth. I had a really nice California cab. I did not order the amazing garlic bread but just had regular bread with maple butter. I ordered the lunch prime rib which came with creamy mashed potatoes and crispy onions. It was okay but a little underdone for me. Then I had an espresso and the pecan pie for dessert. I couldn't remember anything about the pie from before, just that it was rich. I totally forgot that it was freaking huge and a meal in itself. Nevertheless I sucked back half of it and by the time I was done lunching it was time to go to the CBC.
I went into the CBC store and looked around but didn't see anything I wanted to buy, or should I say I saw nothing that I wanted to carry for the rest of the day and back to New Brunswick. Have I mentioned that it was over 34 degrees with humidity pushing the temperature much higher setting new records for Toronto? I found my way to the right entrance for The Hour on John Street and entered air conditioning just in the nick of time before I died of complete heat exhaustion.
I was a little early and not sure where I was supposed to be so I went up to the security desk to inquire. I'm standing there waiting when I hear a familiar voice. I turn and Brian Dennehy is standing right beside me barking into his phone. His handler or agent or what have you was the girl being helped in front of me. Kinda cool. I was one of the first people to arrive so I went to stand along the wall and wait to check in. While I was standing there George walked by about a half dozen times always pausing to say hello and high-five people, thanking us for coming. Again, kinda cool. Also while I waited in line, Salman Rushdie came in with his agent or manager or what have you and was introduced to CBC staff right in front of me. Nobody else in the line seemed to recognize him or something and I must've had an oh-my-god-it's-rushdie look on my face because when he went to go up to the studio he looked at me and nodded and we said hello. Very cool.
They took us upstairs in small groups of around 25 people. I was in the first group. Once upstairs we were offered snacks of Sun Chips and corralled in four lines. George was still running all around. They had a big tv set up outside the studio and hooked up to Guitar Hero. Anyone who wanted to could play to try and win comfy seats on the leather couch for them and their guests. I've never played before so I didn't try. The guy who won was an addict anyway, so nobody could have beat him, but it didn't matter I ended up with a better seat than the couch anyway. You don't get to choose your seat, they have a guy who seats you, and he put me in the front row right beside George's chair directly facing the guest. Best damn seat in the house! Seriously!
George talks to the audience during commercials answering questions and requesting feedback. They also give away prizes. They had several copies of Rushdie's book, gift certificates for massages, cosmetic prize packs, a funky looking vacuum and a bunch of other stuff. I didn't win anything, but I didn't care, less stuff to carry you know, and I was just happy to be there.
It felt like Rushdie was speaking directly to me throughout his interview, he seemed to be looking right at me. Of course I was sitting right beside the camera, so I'm sure that's what he was really looking at. Dennehy was really entertaining. And we had an extra special treat because they pre-taped an interview with Muhammad Yunus that will air on tonight's show. So look for me in the audience tonight as well. After the show I waited around and met George and got my picture taken with him. If I can ever figure out how to get it off my camera, I'll post it on Facebook or something. I watched the show later and saw myself in the audience several times. If you go to The Hour website you can watch the interviews and look for me.
When I came out from the studio into the heat I saw it had rained recently but it hadn't cooled off the city any. I walked back to Union and took the subway up to St. Clair West where I promptly lost my head to humidity and jumped on a streetcar heading east ... it didn't take long for me to realize I was going the wrong way so I got a transfer and switched. By the time I arrived at Taia and Ian's I was an addled wilted mush brain. Yes, stupid with the heat. It happens. But I cooled down eventually and we spent the evening reading, watching a movie and then The Hour. We went to bed kind of late amidst a terrible thunder storm. Wicked. I think something close by must have gotten struck by lightning. At one point everything went dark for a couple of seconds. I did manage to get some sleep though. I had the alarm set for 4:45 am but woke up on my own at 4:20 and just got up rather than bear the sound of the alarm first thing. Taia got up and wished me a good trip. I showered and packed and was waiting on the front porch when the airport taxi arrived around 5:30.
I had absolutely no problems at Pearson whatsoever. Security were in better spirits than the guys in Moncton had been. Westjet gates were right there and my flight clearly labeled. People were lined up forever to get into the Tim Horton's, so I opted for the much shorter (one person in front of me) line at an independent coffee shop, where the coffee was perfectly fine. I got a coffee, apple juice and bagel with cream cheese and settled in to wait. Our flight was delayed by 10 minutes. I later learned this was because they were waiting on a connecting flight from out west, which was eventually diverted to Hamilton and we ended up leaving without those passengers anyway. One minute we had sunshine outside the wall of windows and the next there was nothing but black with the clouds seeming to press right in on us to the point where you couldn't even see to the end of the gates where the planes waited for boarding. Rain lashing the windows. Lightning brightening everything. And our flight delayed by another 10 minutes. Not that I wanted to fly out in that storm. Tornado was definitely a concern. But the weather lifted and we eventually started to board. Now my main concern was arriving in Moncton in time to catch the bus to Miramichi.
The captain spoke with us at the beginning of the flight to calm anyone's nerves about the delays and the weather. It worked. At least on me. I was sitting in seat 13F, window seat, but right on the wing, which kind of sucked for looking straight down when there was a break in the clouds and you could see the ground. The flight was uneventful. I watched a little tv and enjoyed the world outside my window. I wanted to strangle the guy sitting next to me who used his cellphone during the flight, but I figured it can't be THAT dangerous or else they'd ban the damn things rather than trust people (idiots) not to use them ... right? They would, right? Anyway, that's how I kept myself from freaking out on his arrogant ass. Because by this time I was starting to get really tired and cranky. We made good time to Moncton flying higher (44,000 feet) and faster (560 mph) than we had on the flight to Toronto. I didn't have any bags checked so once we were on the ground I just exited and grabbed a cab to the bus station downtown arriving in lots of time to catch my bus.
I dozed in and out most of the bus ride. In Miramichi for some strange reason there were no cabs waiting, so I called one and then shared it with an older lady going to Chatham. Yesterday afternoon I mostly just chilled and watched Sex and the City episodes, stumbling to bed pretty early, where as I've said I slept very well. Today, I feel a bit like I've been hit by a truck. Sore. Tired around the eyes. Needing to clean up and get back into the routine.

Start Me Up
It never fails, if left on random play iTunes always knows what's up in the world. God! Did I ever need The Stones right about now! Little booster shot in the arm of rock energy.
So I've been hideously lax in my blogging, I know. This is me on "Wonder Woman Superhero Maxxed-Out Busy" speed. You know above and beyond the usual "super-busy" speed that we've all grown to know and love.
When things get this busy it's necessary to cut stuff out of my life. Housework is always the first to go, naturally. If you were to pop by today (please don't) you'd see the evidence in the dirty dishes covering every inch of my counter in the kitchen, stacked in the sink, piled on top of the stove, the dust bunnies billowing around the floor, the pile of laundry in the basket on the floor in my bedroom, my unmade bed, the fact that I would not allow you to use my bathroom, and so on.
The second thing to be cut is usually outings--the errand run-around, walks to the cove, anything that takes me out of the apartment and away from my work at the computer. I'll blow you off if you call or email and ask me to visit or go out anywhere. Most times I've got the ringer off and I won't even answer the phone. Last week I set out first thing Monday morning to go to the bank, grocery store, post office, pharmacy and all that stuff people need to do . . . but I didn't actually leave the apartment and go do those things until Thursday afternoon. Yeah, it took me that long to find an hour where I felt that was the most important thing I needed to be doing.
Next to be cut is unnecessary online stuff like my daily sudoku puzzle, reading people's blogs, posting on message boards, following message boards, downloading music, and posting to my blogs. I'll still make time to watch some videos, but I'll give up movies and hour-long tv shows in favour of movie trailers and 22-minute commercial-edited sitcoms, which I'll only watch while I'm doing something else, usually eating.
Speaking of eating, that habit also changes when I get this busy. Gone are the days of wellness with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack or two. Some days I forget to eat at all, and food only occurs to me when I feel dizzy and weak. Most days I just eat one meal, at supper time, and everyday last week it was pretty much the same thing -- 4-5 chicken wings with hot sauce and a garden green salad.
And then I stop sleeping my normal 5-7 hours in my bed. Instead I find myself crashing on the futon beside my computer for two hours a night, catching the occasional 20 minute nap in the afternoon when I can no longer function.
So that's some of the stuff I haven't been doing and some of the stuff I have.
This week is another full-tilt maxxed-out kinda week where I will need every ounce of my Wonder Woman reserve strength. And then next week things calm, but only slightly . . . because there's Anna's Birthday, and Words on Water, and Abby's Birthday, and the JDRF Walk for the Cure in Moncton and don'cha know the following week I's be going to the T-Dot, so there's some insanity involved in prep for that trip naturally . . . and then there's the trip . . . followed closely by my birthday . . . and a maybe trip to Fredericton the week after that for Cake and then we're into the July long weekend . . . followed by the MWW and small press bookfair . . . another issue of BnM drops about then . . . and at some point there's Gerry's workshop in Sackville (I need to find the dates/details for that) that I really want to take . . . oi! I can't think that far ahead, must focus on today.
My to-do-today list has grown by four just while I wrote this post :-( Emails coming in, pinging me with tasks. And I bet you thought today was a holiday.

Everybody Knows
It's been a day. I woke up to heavy wet snow, almost ice pellets, type weather, so I called F at Rogers and begged to reschedule my interview. Instead we opted for him to come to my place and film me in front of my bookcase, with my books. This was better than going out. I maybe should've worn a different top . . . I forgot about the mic thing . . . so it's quite possible dear old F got quite the eyeful as we got me plugged in. But maybe it wasn't as terrible as it seemed in the moment. I forgot to say an awful lot of stuff, but I did say some things, so hopefully it'll be enough and be okay, and I won't come off like the inarticulate idiot I felt like as we taped. I never get to see it anyway (even though it'll likely be picked up province-wide) so bygones! I'm not giving it another thought.
We finished just in time for me to get on the hunt for Leonard Cohen tix for Moncton or Fredericton. There were two of us looking . . . And that was a bust. Sold out pretty quickly. But that was okay, because then an email came in from WestJet announcing one of those purchase your tickets today seat sales and I have a friend in Toronto with tickets to Lenny already in hand who has offered to take me with. So I viewed the WestJet seat sale as a sign that I am to go back to the big city and immediately booked a flight. I leave June 5, return June 10. Yay me! I envision a low-stress, no-commitment excursion, none of the tourist stuff, no $15 martinis or $35 breakfasts and most definitely absolutely no excursions into the old Alderwood stomping grounds. Peace, relaxation, Cohen, you know, a zen-like buddist type trip. A spiritual and creative awakening, none of that freaking tension I had last time from the stress of returning to the scene of the crime. Hopefully the weather will be nice.
Somewhere in all this tickets racket I found time to make the lasagna I've been wanting to make. Chicken, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, ricotta cheese . . . It is my first one. It has been kind of an ordeal. A learning experience. I won't get into all the nitty gritty details, suffice it to say that it took all freaking day! Off and on. My NEXT lasagna will kick ass, this one, not so much, lol, but hey, it's edible. Well, I'm eating it, I WILL be eating it for many days to come, I am not in any hurry to feed it to anyone else. Live and learn, they say. And now every pot and knife in my house is dirty, so I have to do dishes all night.
Despite the crazy weather outside, today is the first day of spring and boy! Do I ever feel it! Man! All this crazy spring energy whirling around my brain. I don't care that there's a ton of snow still, I feel springlike. I want to go places and do things and I feel recharged and energized. Maybe it's just all the company this week and all the talk of travel and all the plans I've made already and all the plans I've yet to make . . . I don't know. But I like it.
It's Easter weekend. I'm not going up home. Too much to do. Plus I didn't want to tempt myself by potatoes with gravy, apple crisp, and all that. I shall stay home and work and eat spinach salad and lasagna!

Aww Jeeze!
And just when I think I have averted sudden disaster--my head will not explode but remain attached for another day . . . then I remember I have to go on tv tomorrow morning . . . Oh man! Now I've got all this other stuff to think about. What should I wear? What time do I have to leave? How much make-up do I need so I don't look washed out and super pale? And what the frig should I talk about anyway? Should I print off some notes? I probably won't be able to reference them. And what about my hair? Thank God I never get to see these pieces. I'd be a real wreck.
Leonard tix go on sale tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be back in time. With any luck my excursion will happen pre-snow/ice pellets.
The reason I couldn't open iTunes this morning, I think was because my hard drive was full. I deleted some programs and movies and stuff and got a gig back then iTunes opened fine. I need to clean up pix in the bnm files, i think. i have a crap load of music too, but the pix are backed up on the server anyway, so i don't think i need them anyway. Well, at least the ones that we've already pubbed. And I don't really want to burn all the tunes to disc, that's just so limiting in the randomness factor.

Oh Brother
I so hope Danielle doesn't win BB8. Is anyone with me on that? Do other people like her? I cannot stand her whining childishness. She has grated on my last nerve since the beginning. She's like a bad young lad. I like Dick less as the show progresses, I liked him more in the beginning. It's the gloating as it gets down to the end that is turning me off. I didn't mind the attacks all along, that was entertaining and interesting game strategy, but I just can't stand poor winners. And I just feel sorry for poor Zack. At this point I'd sooner see ED win it, with Zack second or even vice versa. The idea of Dani winning the whole thing makes me want to puke. Thoughts? Anyone watching?
Going to Fredericton on Friday to see Matt Mays perform at Harvest Jazz Blues Festival. I can't get excited about it, too much to do to get there. I've even been thinking about giving my ticket away and staying home.

For Reasons Unknown
Last night I watched a couple of movies. First I watched the latest in the Die Hard series, Live Free or Die Hard. I've been curious about it because normally I'm not into the whole series and sequel thing (well, except for Bourne and Clerks) but the Die Hard series started back in 1988, there's a lot of history there. To have one come out now, after all these years, well, it's a curious thing. Same thing with the latest Rocky, though I haven't watched it yet, I know I will eventually. And when Stallone's new Rambo comes out hopefully by Christmas, then I'll be plunking down a ten to go see that sucker in the theatre.
Anyway back to Die Hard.
When it opened in theatres earlier this summer I honestly had no urge to go see it. But then it did pretty good box office, which doesn't mean much, just that a lot of people went to see it. But then I started to hear some really good stuff about it. And yes, granted most of the good feedback was coming from Kevin Smith (who is in the movie) and his friends via Smodcast and his blog, but still, if he was in the movie and it sucked they're the types to say it sucked, or at least to not say anything at all. But all summer it's been coming up in their conversation as one of the great summer movies. So I was curious.
Last night I'm flicking through looking for something to watch and I came across it, so I hit play just to see the quality, whether it looked any good or not, and the opening credits are rolling while I'm deciding and then Timothy Olyphant's name rolls up and that was that! Any doubts instantly vanished and I settled in to watch the movie. I love, love, love Timothy Olyphant! If you're not watching Deadwood, you need to stop everything and go find an episode right now. I'm not kidding. I don't care if you don't like westerns, neither do I . . . until now.
Live Free or Die Hard is a really good watch. Lots of action. Great stunts and special effects. Engaging storyline. Bruce Willis is still believable as a major action star (unlike Nicolas Cage who really seemed to be way too old to be Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider) John McClane is as rough around the edges and sarcastic as he was way back when. So, if you've been on the fence or not even interested, give this one a chance. I had forgotten how much i enjoyed the original Die Hard. This is, in my opinion, as good as the first and better than the second and third parts.
After all that action I wanted to unwind with something lighter, so I went looking for a good comedy. I came across Fun with Dick and Jane, which I had never seen. Tea Leoni can be pretty funny. I prefer Jim Carrey in his more dramatic roles like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but of course he can also be very funny, he practically invented funny. I did have a few laugh out loud moments, but even though it came out a few years ago I had still seen most of the really good laughs in the previews which kinda ruins the movie. (How come they don't ever hold something back?) Still, it wasn't all bad, for that kind of a movie it's worth a watching one time, don't rush out and buy the dvd or anything, but if it's on cable, why not?
After the movies I was feeling pretty zonked so I went to bed. I put in this free dvd I got in a box of Orville Redenbacher microwave popcorn this week. It has pilot episodes of four shows: Heroes, The Office, Miami Vice and Friday Night Lights plus a couple of extra features. I started to watch Friday Night Lights because I've never seen or really heard much about that show. It's interesting looking, gritty and real, but it couldn't hold me through the sleepies I'm afraid. So I shut it off half-way through and crashed. I really liked the look of it though. I'll give it another go sometime.

New Addictions
I am addicted to Wasa Multigrain Crispbread. They are fantabulous!! And I'm not even kidding. I had tried the Ryvita Dark Rye Crispbread before but found it lacking. I wasn't that impressed. So then right before I took off to Barnbonia I had purchased the Wasa brand. Then I went off the deep end into the pit of burgers, nachos, fried chicken, french fries, ketchup chips, Rolo ice cream . . . you get the idea. I still haven't gone for groceries, haven't restocked a healthy larder here. I should be saving the Wasa for a healthy day! But I can't help myself. I love, love, love them! I spread them with peanut butter and enjoy with a hot cup of coffee or rooibos tea. They never go soggy. And they are totally yummy. Products like those make eating healthy easy.
Save the cheerleader, save the world. WOW! Just a few episodes and I am totally addicted to Heroes. I think Season One came out on DVD yesterday or maybe it's next week, but if you didn't get to see this during the regular season, you must get caught up before Season Two begins! I can't stop watching. The cliffhanger endings are going to be the death of me. I love the Japanese guys. I've been watching online, which you can also do if you have high-speed. There are only a few tv shows that I'd consider buying on dvd, and mostly they're sitcoms, like Seinfeld, Frasier and Friends, stuff that never gets old and you love to watch repeatedly, but Heroes, much like Lost, is one show where I would love to get hold of the extras, watch and analyze upside down right side up and sideways. I'm almost ready to turn comic book geek . . . almost.
I desperately want a pedometer. Studies show that people who focus on upping their steps to at least 10,000 per day have more success at maintaining an active lifestyle than people who focus on minutes or distance. So I want a pedometer. I've wanted one for awhile. My mom bought me one at the Dollar Store, but surprise surprise it really doesn't work. Then she gave me hers, which was an expensive good one back in the day . . . but it only measures in kilometres. So I want a good pedometer that's not going to break the bank. I'm not real sure what I'm looking for, which brands are good, what features are important . . . any thoughts? Anybody? I want to become addicted to movement. It's a thought.

The Surreal Life
Slept late, til just after 10. Last night some strange combination of complete exhaustion, Sunday Night Anxiety, joy and excitement at being home took hold and had me bouncing off the walls and ceilings until nearly 5am. A little knackered today, but trying to get on track, get organized and get stuff done. Somebody mowed the lawn at the house next door. FINALLY! Remember the puppy who used to live there? Remember when he moved away? Like ages ago! Yeah, lawn hasn't been mowed since then, until late last week. It was like a field, small trees coming up, grass to your thighs, weeds growing willy nilly, looks much better now.
The skin continues to peel off my arms from the super bad sunburn I got on the long weekend at the family reunion. It's kinda gross. I also think the kitty scratches on the palm of my hand are going to permanently scar, kinda sorta looks that way. A new life line! There are a couple on my arm that may leave scarring too, but maybe it just hasn't been long enough for them to go away completely yet.
Today I need to clean up my inbox, plan my week, do laundry, tidy up my bedroom and put on my fuzzy sheets (because I'm still cold!), edit a bunch of stories, determine what I need for groceries, take a shower, and maybe go to the store. I also need to catch up on last night's BB8. Yesterday I watched the Season Premiere of Weeds. Yay! I've also started watching Heroes. I'm only on the third episode but I'm liking it so far. Lets hear it for high-speed! :-)
Oh well, not getting anything done this way, am I? And she's off!
Mood: chipper
Drinking: coffee, fresh ground, organic, fair trade, french roast, black
Listening To: fish (probably trout) sizzling in a fry pan on a hot plate on the patio next to the one below me
Hair: pulled back out of the way

Sex and Anarchy
Nothing says good morning like Sid Vicious. I have been busy. Blog neglectful. I am working so hard. It's overwhelming. But not paralytic. I keep on keeping on. I can't wait for the moment when I can catch my breath. Soon. Fingers crossed. Busy week coming up, lots of events, appointments, meetings, gatherings, and the like. The summer whirlwind is winding up. I think there are some swallows nesting in the eaves of my building. The singing in the morning is wonderful! I think they like my music. Last night I made an attempt to get to sleep early. I went in before it was even dark, at about 9:15, read for a half hour, turned out the light, focused on relaxing breathing and tried to quiet my mind. At 11 o'clock I gave up, turned on my boyfriend, George, and made popcorn because I was starving. Turned off the tv sometime after Arrested Development, drifted soon after. When my alarm went off at 6am it was a bit of a struggle but I pushed through. Lots to do! And Dad is coming this morning to deliver and hook up my washer and dryer. Praise Jesus! I have been holding off on the laundry situation waiting for this for WAY long . . . WAY!
Yesterday it was no problem to tell it was the weekend around here. Shortly after 3pm boats, kayaks and sea-doos of all sizes and colours begin a steady stream from Ritchie Wharf onto the river. Those sea-doo people are crazy mothers! They go 10 times faster than anyone else and seem to be 20 times as reckless. Anyone who brings a kayak into this river has balls, I'll give them that. And now Johnny Rotten has left the building and I need more coffee.
Mood: surprisingly alert
Drinking: coffee, fresh ground, perked, dark roast, fair trade organic, black

Hair: my hair used to be more interesting, i'm letting myself go

Everybody Gets a Star
Gorgeous sunshine, but damn chilly outside. Kids sleigh ride cancelled due to it being 40 below. There is a wind chill warning in effect. Still my pumpkin and the missus are dropping by later for a picnic lunch in my living room (picnic as in packed and brought from their home, cuz i have no food for them). Then they are going to a Toonie matinee showing of Happy Feet at the theatre. I should go with them. Even though I don't have time. I should make time. I don't know if I can handle a March Break theatre full of kids though. I've been getting a lot of headaches this week. The knock-off tylenol I have does not help in the least. I need some ibuprofen.
Last night I watched some of the second season of Project Greenlight on dvd, The Battle of Shaker Heights. I enjoy the Project Greenlight show. It's too bad they stopped. It's interesting to see how they make movies, how it takes so many people working together. And these are small sets! They only have a million dollars to make the whole movie. It's crazy to think about the big productions and what it must take to get them made. It's inspiring too. I get inspired when I watch these types of things. Being a screenwriter is a shit job though. I can see that easily enough. The only way is to write & direct your own stuff. Like Cameron Crowe. Like Kevin Smith. He must make a living. I've been listening to his smodcast on itunes. Love him!
Last night I spent a good 3 hours putting together my piece on last week's murder mystery evening, but then I accidentally deleted it from my computer. Yeah, this crap happens sometimes. So now I've got to do it all over again.
